We’re committed to sustainability because each choice we make affects how we work, what we build and the footprint we leave. Our aim is to make consistent progress in the way our studio operates, the services we deliver and the partnerships we pursue.
Our approach
We have been integrating digital sustainability practices for over 20 years: from waterless printing and recycled paper in the 1990s to hosting services on wind-powered servers in the 2000s. Today we extend that mindset into our digital sustainability practices by setting measurable targets for energy use, waste, sourcing and emissions.
Energy use
We review our Manchester studio every year for energy performance, using LED lighting throughout, double-glazed windows to cut heating demand, and thermostatic and app-controlled heating that can be managed remotely.
We buy our electricity from Octopus Energy, which supplies 100% of its energy from zero carbon sources. At Corporation Pop, we source everyday items, from the fair trade coffee from Jurang to our paper products, responsibly and locally where possible.
Digital infrastructure
We host all our digital services, including high-traffic festival websites, on Amazon Web Services (AWS). AWS is powered by 90% clean energy and has committed to 100% renewable energy by 2025, net zero by 2040, and water positivity by 2030. Their infrastructure is around five times more energy efficient than the average European data centre.
Sustainable water use
Our water use is minimal but we manage it carefully. Fixtures are low-flow, and we review consumption annually as part of our environmental checks.
Waste and recycling practices
We keep things paper-light and store documents digitally. Recycling happens across all materials, and we either donate old hardware to charities or recycle it through certified schemes. Whenever we can, we reduce first — then reuse or repurpose.
Travel and transport
Hybrid working has cut commuting by around 40%. Most of our team walk, cycle, or use public transport to get to the studio, and we run a Cycle to Work scheme. Senior staff drive electric vehicles, and we use remote tools to keep business travel to a minimum.
Equipment and materials
When choosing studio and IT equipment we look for energy efficiency and recycle it responsibly at end of life. We avoid unnecessary packaging, prefer FSC-certified or recycled materials, and partner with suppliers who share our values. We keep single-use plastics to an absolute minimum.
Working culture
Sustainability isn’t a box-ticking exercise at Corporation Pop, it’s part of how we think. We encourage everyone in the team to find ways to avoid waste and reduce emissions. Where we can’t avoid impact, we look for credible ways to offset it.
Looking ahead
From pioneering greener print methods in the 1990s to our current focus on renewable hosting and low-impact working, we’ve always aimed to do better. Sustainability is part of how we’ve worked for more than thirty years.
